Beliefs |
We believe that
all animals have rights; That animals are more than something for humankind to use regardless of the
animals' feelings; That animals should be free; That the animals born into captivity for human use have the right to be alive
and cared for after they have served out their usefulness to humans; That animals have the right to live free of fear or pain from humans, in any forms;
That we can all make a difference, one being at a time.

Sherri Delaney Sherri is the founder of Story Book Farm along with her husband Len. Her background is in law enforcement with the majority of her training focusing on domestic violence. She is a published author on the history of policing and during her career she has been tasked with opening and operating a police museum. Always with a love for animals she evolved to study the plight of animals in animal testing labs, as well as the exotic animal trade in Canada and the issues the animals face. Her love for primates helped her focus on them and to open the only monkey sanctuary in Canada. Sherri’s belief is that she is not special; she is simply one person trying to make a difference in our world.
Len White Len is in the electrical trade but is very handy when things need to fixed. Len started out by supporting Sherri but soon became drawn in by the monkeys. His first love started with Suzie who is always trying to catch Len with her tail as he works in the monkey house. Without Len, the monkeys would not have the home they do as he is always building on their behalf.
Melissa George Melissa is from the Whitby area. She attended Oxford Brookes University in 2005 where she graduated in Primate Conservation. She spent some time in field research observing Mandrills before returning to Canada. Her love for primates sent her to us approximately two years ago. She has been an avid supporter who has always been on hand at every barn demolition or barn construction Story Book Farm has ever done. We are very grateful that Melissa is a part of our team.
Carol Kenning Carol is Sherri’s mom. Initially, she was supportive of whatever Sherri was going to be doing. As the monkeys arrived at the sanctuary one by one and as she was introduced to each of them she grew to love and admire them. Carol now has an awareness of the issues surrounding primates in Canada. During her visits from Winnipeg where she resides, she is often found wandering the property or in the barn giving treats to all the animals. While at the sanctuary she rolls up her sleeves and pitches in, usually by helping with nightly dinners. The monkeys love it when Grandma comes for a visit.
Charmaine Quinn Charmaine is from the Toronto area and is heavily involved in working with animals in need and donating her time and her heart to them. Her weekends are spent at the Toronto Wildlife Centre, the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada, the Toronto Zoo and Story Book Farm. Her love for Orangutans has her volunteering her time at the Toronto Zoo as an interpreter for the Orangs. In August 2006 Charmaine went to Borneo where she worked at the rehabilitation centre where she cared for orphaned and ex captive orangutans. Another visit to Borneo is scheduled for July 2008. Charmaine is also involved with the Balikpapen (Borneo) Orangutan Society headed by Dr. Anne Russon of York University. We are so lucky to have Charmaine.
Kim Meehan Kim Lives in the Oshawa area. She has dedicated her life to helping the great apes of the world. Kim has a degree in zoology and is a keeper at the Toronto Zoo. She currently works with the cheetahs, baboons, and mandrills. In the past she has worked with the gorillas who still remember her and love her when they see her in the pavilion. Kim’s compassion has taken her to Cameroon where she worked at the Mvog-Betsi Zoo sharing husbandry practices with zoo keepers. She is currently the president of the Canadian Association for Bushmeat Awareness and works very hard on issues surrounding the bush meat trade in Africa. Kim has also worked on behalf of Fauna Foundation in Montreal and CWAF (Cameroon Wildlife Aid Fund.) It is an honor to have Kim.
Rachelle Hansen Rachelle is a very busy lady who has devoted her life to advocate on behalf of those who do not have a voice of their own. She is an environmentalist whose interests include all aspects of primates. Rachelle’s large heart and strong beliefs have taken her to Cameroon where she has cared for orphaned and troubled chimpanzees. A consultant by trade and animal activist by heart, this combination makes Rachelle a wealth of knowledge and abilities. We are blessed to have Rachelle with us.
Laura Adams, MA Laura is currently working on her PhD in Psychology at York University under the supervision of Dr. Anne Russon. Her research focuses on cognitive development in orangutans. She travels to Indonesian Borneo to study infant and juvenile orangutans at rehabilitation projects. These young orangutans are orphaned due to reduced habitat from palm oil plantations and the illegal pet trade. They are rehabilitated to be released back into the rain forest to help preserve this endangered species. For her master's degree in 2004 she observed social learning: how young orangutans learn what to eat from each other. For her PhD she is studying the cognitive and social aspects of play. Laura says that watching dinner time at Story Book Farm is her favourite part of the week. Laura loves volunteering at Story Book Farm - for the opportunity to improve the lives of primates living in Canada. We are so happy to have Laura's beautiful presence enriching the lives of our residents!
